email and the university

Well, as you may know I work at The University of Louisville.  One of the things that my team manages is email servers.  We had someon send a ton of large files today and slow the whole system down.  While it was a real pain for our team, it also showed the vulnerability in the system.  We are using groupwise for our email, and will be migrating to Exchange soon.  I wonder if such a situation will be better or worse for Exchange?  Of course, it will be on all new machines rather than almost five year old ones, so that should help.  Fun with email!!!!

I have learned more about email and email servers in the last few weeks than I ever thought I would. It is very interesting how so many completely different systems and setups work together so that people can send email.  The end user does not realize that one email may touch as many as 20 different servers between sending and recieving.  Fun.
