Today we went to Florence Mall in Florence KY. It is about 50 minutes north east of La Grange KY where we live. The interesting thing was the stream of power repair trucks. There were trucks with generators, grills, and pallets of plywood. At least two of which had signs about Gustav, and indicating that they were on their way to Louisiana. It may end up being the largest overreaction about a hurricane, but my wife and I agreed that it has to be. We as a country have failed in Louisiana. When there is a city that sustained such damage and three years later is still in really really bad shape, you would assume that it had to be in some other country. Not here in the US. We would never let that happen. Well we did. We are.
My prayer is that Gustav does little damage, but we use it as the call to finish the job in New Orleans that should have been done. I will not argue that there are parts of New Orleans that never should have been built up in the first place. The opportunity to rebuild a city in a wonderful and fantastic way rarely presents itself. Now it does, and we waste it.
Think of the possibilities that it presents. What if you could have your city wired from the ground up? Can you say fiber link to every house? Efficient air conditioners everywhere? What if you could redesign the way all of the fire hydrants in your town were located? Hmmm. Build schools where they should be rather than where they are. From the ground up. Rebuild ports so that they are secure AND efficient.
Just think of the possibilities. Now write your congressman (woman) and let them kow that we as a country should stop shoving off our responsibility to rebuild New Orleans, and take grasp of the opportunity.
